Westbound I-4 traffic should exit at U.S. 301. Turn Right (west) on Martin Luther King and go to stop light turn right (north) on Orient Road follow to Fairgrounds entrance on right

From I-75 north or south use Exit 52B. Take Martin Luther King Blvd west to Orient Road turn right competition grounds entrance 1/2 mile on the right.

The Florida Horse Park is on the left hand side.From 441S (OCALA): Take 441S, turn right at SW 1st (at the BP station). Go under the RR trestle, then, take a slight right at the 3-Way stop at SE 3rd. SE 3rd becomes Hwy 475. Continue down SE 3rd/475 approximately 7 miles. The entrance to the Horse Park is on your right.

Take 27th Ave (turn in between Star bucks and Burger King) south. Continue on 27th Ave/475A approximately 6.5 miles. Make a slight turn to the right at SW 107th Place/475B. When 107th Place/475B dead-ends, turn, right. The entrance is on your right.

History and How the Show Horse is Scored during Competition

Jumping did not become a feature of “hunting” until late in the 1700’s. This was largely due to a basic improvement in horse breeding, following the importation of Arabians into England, that produced a horse that could easily gallop and jump at speed and foxhunting became very popular. Prior to this time no one dreamed of “teaching” their horse to jump. The development of the “light horse” that could be used for many purposes , at speed, was the key.

It was the French however who took jumping into art form and throughout the 1600’s to the 1800’s the principles of riding that are used today were evolved. The style of show jumping called “Grand Prix” first took place in France in 1866.

But from the onset of fox hunting in England, there has been no stopping this popular sport and the hunter inside the show ring an out, thrives as a discipline all over the world today.

JUMPERS

Although it was in 1906 that the congress of the International Olympic Committee decided that equestrian sports should be include in the Games, it was not until 1965 that the first Grand Prix took place in the Untied States.

Since then many, many f Grand Prix events are offered with several millions in prize money. Today there are millions of horses in the United States and millions of riders. Show Jumping is a sport where people meet as competitors, regardless of sex or age.

No two Grand Prix courses are ever the same and a course designers alters courses according to the level of competition making the course a real test of both horse in terms of jumping ability and the rider in terms of timing and judgment. Distances between fences will vary, various types of combinations are employed and the actual placement of fences can alter the direction of how the course must be ridden and jumped. ( A combination = two or more fences known as double and triple combinations ). Often a Grand Prix rider will ride more than one horse which is a real test of skill as each horse requires different handling and has different skills.

All jumper classes use the same scoring systems. Horse and rider must take fences in a specified sequence. Their goal is to cover the course with no faults within the time allowed. The style of horse and rider is not a factor and does not affect scoring. However, the rider must excel at guiding the horse to each fence is a balanced manner so the horse may jump successfully and land galloping without having to break stride. A good rider knows the length of his mount’s stride, with one cantering stride roughly equaling 12 ft. and all riders are allowed “to walk the course” once to plan and determine the best way to cover that course with a particular horse and to save vital time when jumping against the clock. The horse only sees the course once, that being at the time of performance.

Styles of Jumps:

The over all types of jumps are vertical( straight) fences and (wide) spread fences. How high, how wide, the construction and placement in relation to other jumps determines the difficulty of the course.

Vertical: A straight up and down fence, any height without width to it.

The Wall: A solid looking fence, to be jumped boldly, with the top sections being made of individual blocks able to which fall if hit, so as to give the knockdown penalty.

Oxer: Two elements in one jump in order to produce a wide spread. The parallel oxer --the front and back rails are of equal height.

Triple bar: Three elements of graduating heights; a very wide jump.

Combination: Two or three fences, one to two strides apart each fence marked with a number, followed by the letter of order to be jumped ( 1A, 1B, 1C). If a horse stops in any part of the combination, the rider must start over again from the first fence and jump A, B and C again.

Water Jump: A low hedge may be placed at the beginning of the jump or be placed in the center of the water. This is a very wide jump ( 12 to 16 feet) and the horse must also clear the white tape on the far side or else receive penalty.

Gate: A vertical jump made to appear solid by using planks, gates and or brush

Scoring Guidelines:

1/4th of a Time Fault:
For each second, or part of a second over the time allowed

4 Faults:
A first time refusal to jump.

4 Faults:
When any part of a fence is knocked down
If the horse steps on the edge of, or in, the water jump.

6 Faults:
For a second refusal to jump.

Elimination:
For a third refusal to jump.
If either the horse or rider falls.

The horse with the fewest faults (penalties) is the winner.

Open jumper classes are often “Jump Offs”, meaning that all horses jumping without penalties are asked to return for a jump-off round over a shorter course. The scoring is the same, except if a tie occurs and then the fastest wins..

If there is a problem with the horse, or trouble covering the course, or if too many faults have been accrued, a rider may decide not to continue and to leave the ring which is indicated with a nod of the head or by tipping the hat to the judge.

HUNTERS IN COMPETITION

Judges try to determine which hunter in a class most closely approximates the ideal mount for a ride to hounds. A hunter need beauty, with proper conformation proportions and a small head. Tack should be clean, both bits and horse shiny and clean. The horse’s mane should be braided ( small evenly spaced braids) and his tail braided and well combed below the braids. The hunter should have little leg action as less actions conserves energy for the hunting field. For the same reason, the horse should be relaxed with a low neck lightness of carriage and a good expression
( ears up and alert for the hunting course ahead).

In judging a Hunter Round, jumping style is of course paramount, with front legs folded even and high. The head and neck outstretched and down in good balance of body and “do the job style”. A top hunter never appears difficult to handle. The rider is never judged, but must present his horse as favorable as possible, with as little motion as possible and presenting a look of relaxation and ease.

Judging begins the moment the horse and rider enter the ring and the rider will make an “opening circle” before guiding the horse to the first jump. The hunter should clear every jump consistently, in good style, with ease and confidence. The pace should also remain consistent, with sudden changes penalized by the judges. A knock down or a refusal are heaving penalized. The horse should remain in the middle of each jump and move with ease through the corners. Beauty, utility and style win ribbons.

Hunter Under Saddle classes are on the flat . The horses are judged at the walk, trot and canter with consideration given to both manners and movement. Again, the hunter must move seemingly without effort wand with the least amount of leg action, moving on a light mouth contact, relaxed, confident and happy, with ears up, neck out and down. A high head or tail swishing are greatly penalized by the judges.

Several hunter divisions are offered at a show, based on different criteria such as age of horse, age of rider, amateur or professional. Each division has 3 or so jumping classes and one under saddle class. Point are earned in each class and the two with the highest points win either Champion or Reserve ribbon for that division.

Major Hunter Faults :
Refusal; rail down
Cross canter or wrong lead; sudden pace change
Hanging a leg, or knees pointing down when jumping
Running away , out of control, bucking, kicking .

Minor Hunter Faults:
Pace change
Slight rubs on the jumps or not in the center of the jump
Uneven front legs, twisting body
Ears back, tail swishing, mouth open, high head

A Hunt course is designed to copy actual hunt field conditions and contains about eight jumps consisting of natural colored rails, gates and brush, including verticals and oxer-jumps. Often an in-an-out combination is included, allowing only one or two strides between, to stimulate crossing a road and jumping into another field which is a very normal occurrence on a real fox hunt

The impact of equine competition in the United States, goes beyond economics to provide benefits to our national society as a whole, such as building a solid foundation for youth and enhancing both mental and physical fitness for us all. Yet the role of ( the horse show, or horse shows) goes a bit further: the spirit of competition is honed and honored as it is joined with the life lessons of good sportsmanship. The thrill of a blue ribbon is something we all understand, but sometimes getting to the horse show ring, or the event, at all is even more of an achievement.

Pride of ownership can be redoubled by pride of earned accomplishment, and the thrill of a job well done is superseded by experiencing a working partnership with the incredible animal we call "horse". Our horse is the real star of the horse show and teaches us well and of many things: courage, honor, nobility, the spirit of adventure and the spirit of not giving up; the constant generosity of the horse allows us too, to fly without wings.

The social impact of the horse show is tremendous. There are many sanctioned horse shows in the nation annually. Over a quarter of a million young people participate in 4-H programs and pony clubs across the country and horses ( or horse shows, or the horse show) serve(s) people with various disabilities through therapeutic riding. Add to all of this, that quote - " There is something about the outside of a horse, that is good for the inside of a man".

Partnering the horse in competition provides a wonderful opportunity for an enhanced quality of life.

Must See Photos of our 1st year	2006 year will be 10 + shows counting toward year end awards. Join The Best Schooling Horse Show Series in Central and north Florida for FREE. Jan. had El Cazador, Top Call, Para Grim, we had a chilly start with in being in the 30s early, with the afternoon warming up in the 60's. and had the largest walk and walk trot classes ever with 9 entries split. 1st Annual Thanksgiving Show was Great. The whole weekend was blessed with perfect weather and a few new barns joined for 2006 and were glad to find such a nice show. Our August Show was a great Show with a turnout equal to Julys Show. Paragrim Stables, Eden Farms were new to the series and enjoyed the event. We opened the cross country course to all because the entries exceeded 50 again, Sehj management thanks those who support us. We try to make each event better than the last and enclude extras when we can like the free cross country Schooling which was extry due to cost to prepair the large Site. Thanks again. New to the Series, Ledesma Equestrian, Keystone Equestrian, Martin Ranch, Showtime Stables, Remingtons Eq.Center and Ride & Stride Farms. In July Jumpers played for about 3 hrs and the Riders could not get enough. Hunter had great riding conditions as the weather was quite nice. Most divisions went and the Pony ring was non stop action. Little ones doing leadline and the children's pony riders made it look easy, doing some nice rounds. Our March Horse show went great. Barbecue in July was nice and that nasty storm stayed away till late Sunday. St. Pete Times had a Reporter and Photographer stop by Sunday Morning, talked to the riders and trainers, took some pics, and enjoyed the barbecue. Monday, Hernando Times front page was the finest Article to date about SEHJ. Barns are joining from Tampa, Orlando, Ocala, Gainesville, Snow Kiss Stables, Hunter Lane Stables, Brass Ring Equestrian Center, Gold Crest Farm, Niall Brennan Stable,Rocky Top Farm,, Ask these guys about the show. Galaxy Farm, Top Call Farm , Cross Rails Riding Academy, Cav-i Farm, Horseshoe Bend Farm , Tred Avon Farm, Wits End, Ride & Stride Farm. Everyone enjoyed our Shows. The Final show of 2007 was a total success and with over 120 entries we had to work hard to get it all done. With over 40 entries adding after the Pre-Registration date we had to start the Third Ring in the Afternoon. We had some great weather and the footing was at its best. Jumpers Started of ring 1 and went into the afternoon. Finishing with a Mini Prix on Sunday. Ring 2 saw the little ones in the walk and walk trot, finishing up with some ponys late afternoon.

We had to Scramble to work out staffing but with all your help at the in gates everything work out well and I think we will be able to get everyone to Pre register next time so we can have the Appropriate help and not have to have rookies at the ingates. MUST HAVE AT LEAST 90 PRE-ENTRIES TO START ALL 3 RINGS AT 8AM. IN TAMPA.

Also we would like to hear from trainers on how you think we should handle adds in the future.In the past I have always tried to make the process of adding and scratching effortless. But this open door policy is creating problems at the larger shows for creating a timeline of estimated start times for each class. This is very important to participants who do not have several classes to ride/ train throughout the day. I want to try to address the two issues this creates, 1 is a riders class looks like it will start around noon, they get to the ring at noon and because of all the adds, their class don/t start till 3pm. and they are upset. 2nd is when we do barn calls for a class with 4 entries (like baby greens) and we call the low hunters and we say 4 trips till low hunters. 4 Trips go then 3 more come and want to add baby greens. What Should we do? Keep in mind SEHJ needs to see these extra rounds, as we need the Money. We Still Have Volunteers and Investors who Finance all the equipment, At the same time we try make to cost to you our members as low as possible.

CHANGES IN POLICY WILL BE: 1. Stall Fees will not be discounted for those who do not Pre register. 2 Adds to Class will not be allowed 5 min after first horse starts Class, and a add fee of $5 will be added to each classes fee for each class added on the day scheduled to run, and we will Allow 3 Scratches at no charge.

We are very thankfull to all those who supported our 1sr Thanksgiving hunter jumper show, with many more to come. We had hopefull and training jumpers then had a few baby greens, some low hunters, walk trot, poles and cross rails in the other ring. Everyone really likes the footing in the big ring and the small ring was in a great looking grass ring. The show finished up around 3 pm and the weather was fabulous all day. well if you missed us this month be sure to join us Feb. 1-2, 2008, for our 2nd show in Ocala

Sept. 2007, Tampa had the best weather and with a record show of 130 entries the day went by quick, before I knew it, it was over. Overall we are very happy and have made some changes to help shorten the day, the main chang will be adding a third Ring for the hunter Horses, and the jumpers will have their own ring. We will have to put a little pressure on the jumper ring, Septembers with many delays while riders pre pair, we will implement a 2 min. rule on the gate and have to scratch riders who are not ready and move to the next division. The goal is to get all classes in the jumper ring to run a well as the Mini Prix class, which went so smooth and all the riders were ready and some even moved up to help a couple who needed a little more time with multiple horses. Pony's are the best and those little riders came out and did a great job, we had lead line - Pony Medal classes and these guys surely made the show. Some of the best pony's ever. Keep up the good work everyone, keep practicing and we will see you in November at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala for our first of many shows to come to Ocala. We want to say thanks to all of you and Please let me know how I can make these shows even better in 2008 with events in Tampa, Ocala, Orlando, and soon Jacksonville. June 2007, Orlando was great, with nearly 100 entries, every class filled, The mini Prix had 20 entries. We welcome all those who came in on sat morning to join us and hope that every one enjoyed the show. Riders from all over orlando made it to the first SEHJ show in this area. We set up Friday for the saturday event and had all must 60 riders schooled and in the stalls by about 8pm that night. The office was all set for the sat show all the printing was done. Well too our surprise on Saturday morning we had about 40 more entries and a full load on the schedule. Every thing went well considering the printing problem, Classes moved right along and we want to thank all of you for being understanding of how this cause us to have trouble with announcing results. We are making a lot of changes to the office to help accommodate our continued Growth here in the South East, And as always provide an even better weekend at the horse show for Riders, Trainers and Clients, While keeping the cost of riding at Great Facility's over Quality Courses affordable. Plus looking to add even more Money Classes Next Year.

We want to Thank everyone who commented on the event and many asked if we are coming Back and Could they help, the answer is yes, we are working on future dates for SEHJ in Orlando and Ocala, we would like to hear from Jacksonville to see if the local Hunter Jumper community would be Supportive, of SEHJ like Orlando and Tampa. We have been busy the past few weeks sense the show updating office systems and adding for the first time at the sept show, exhibitors terminals. These new computers are real easy to use, riders and trainers will be able to use these to get Results, Schedule, Rider Invoice,and to see how many are in each class. This will help us provide you with even better customer service in the office. A nice September crowd attended our 1st Tampa State Fair Grounds show over 60 participated. It was a beautiful weekend. Mini Prix started about noon on sunday with about 10 entry's.

For the second month in a row Christina Kelly of Ocala, took 1st & 3rd with Aubrey Kahle of Ledesma Equestrian Center, Longwood FL. took home the 2nd place ribbon. In the pony ring we had a great turn out in the walk trot division,with 11 entry's.

We have plenty of stalls and discounts on stabling with pre-entry's 8 days in advance. The mini prix will go on sunday.

Well, You know I will be setting up thursday and friday so leave a message and fax those entries any time before September 29th for stall discounts.

The schedule last month was for only 2 jumping classes on Saturday. Instead of the three and Sunday will have only 2 jumping. The jumper will also see a change in schedule with jumpers starting in the morning on sat and sun with 2 classes for each division. The Mini Prix will go at the end of the jumpers on Sunday, which will be followed by baby greens, lows ect.

Schedule Changes will include Mini Prix on Sunday and Jumper will start at 8 AM Saturday and Sunday followed by the hunters. Ring 2 will offer only 2 jumping classes for most divisions and one Flat on Sat and 2 jumping on Sunday

Upcoming Rule Changes:
A new Add-Scratch policy will go in effect to help prevent check out errors.
Rider expectations will be defined to prevent ring delays.

We Believe that these changes will help improve ring time.

The July show was a winner with a record number of entry's, we more than double with 132 entries. The ring was busy all day on the hottest day of 2006. Participants were great and we gave away 110 stalls and had 10 entries trailer in for the day saving everyone over $3900 also $1000 in prize money for the mini mini prix.

We just finished the mini prix, which saw 14 entries. It was a great class with the top spot going to Ocala’s Christina Kelly with a blazing jump off time 22.53 and taking 2nd also with a 27.01. So be sure to check out the results of the past couple Show By Clicking this Link
